We conducted a review of the literature for the use of three-dimensional (3D) imaging in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. There is little high quality data available on this topic. Current evidence supports non-inferiority of 3D over conventional two-dimensional (2D) systems, with a shorter operative time as the sole consistently-noted benefit of this technology. Further investigation is warranted to better evaluate the role of 3D technology in improving patient-centred outcomes and further empowering clinicians to expand the scope of our practice.
